Supply reading shows values of -2, -3, or -100

Failure

The supply level displayed in the NDD Orbix portal reading shows negative values, such as -2, -3, or -100, instead of a fill percentage.

These values may prevent the direct identification of the remaining supply quantity or the automatic generation of an alert when the supply is running low.

Cause

NDD Orbix does not calculate, estimate, or alter the supply level reported by the printer reading.

The reading is collected directly from the information provided by the supply chip or the printer’s internal memory. Therefore, the values displayed in the monitoring system correspond to the status reported by the equipment itself.

The values have the following meanings:

  • -2: indicates that the supply level is unknown. The printer was unable to determine the quantity of supply available at the time of data collection.
This condition may occur when the printer does not support percentage readings, when the chip does not provide this information, or when the equipment has not yet updated the supply status.

  • -3: indicates that the supply is nearly depleted. The printer reports the supply running low status but does not provide a specific percentage.

  • -100: Indicates that the supply is nearly depleted. The printer reports the supply running low status but does not provide a specific percentage.

Solution

When the printer does not report a numerical percentage of remaining supply, use the supply running low alert based on a specific value:

  1. Configure the supply running low alert rule based on a specific load value, as instructed at Create alert rule for printers with supplies running low, for printers that return specific load values, by entering the values -3 or -100, depending on the supply reading
This rule allows alerts to be generated even when the printer does not report a numerical level of remaining supply.

  2. Wait for a new data collection from the printer

  3. Verify that supplies returning the values -3 or -100 now trigger the supply running low alert

Warning

Do not configure the value -2 as supply running low, as this code indicates an unknown level and does not confirm that the supply is nearly depleted.

Additional information:

  • The replacement of the supply does not guarantee an immediate update of the reading. The new value depends on the update performed by the printer and a subsequent data collection by NDD Orbix.

  • Before investigating a discrepancy in NDD Orbix, check the printer’s panel or the device’s web interface to confirm the value reported by the device.

  • If the printer also displays a negative value on its interface, the analysis should consider the supplies, the supply chip, the firmware, and the model’s ability to report percentage levels.
